This book is an earnest endeavour to bring about a reconciliation between the literature of the Indian Renaissance and its dynamic social milieu. It proposes to engage in the nuanced reading of some of the most controversial novels of the Colonial India that have become classics of the present day. The scrutiny of the social malpractices through the detailed analyses of its women characters reveals how such issues still thrive in different guises in the modern Indian society in its present day. Through their selected novels, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Rabindranath Tagore and Sarat Chandra Chatterjee provide scope for studying female consciousness and the female as human from several perspectives. It is hoped that this exhaustive research may pave the way for further research for all those who might be interested in South Asian literature and its valuable contribution to World Literature in general.
