The main focus of WOMEN LOOKING AT WOMEN is the self-representation of women in Photography. The 20Th century led to new paths in women's representation that challenged the notion of "the gaze" as being purely one sided: men looking at women. The book discusses in context, some of the historical and socio-cultural changes in the perception of the feminine and the "female" artist. It examines how the articulation of these new tendencies in representation, together with an increasing presence of female artists in the Art World, enabled reconsideration and renegotiation of the terms in which women are looked upon. A series of photographic works by key female artists are discussed and juxtaposed. The historical burden of the "male gaze" is confronted by a new myriad of "gazes".
