Union Parishad (UP) is the nearest local government body with the capacity to provide a range of services for the rural population in Bangladesh. Women's representation was abysmally low at this level which is considered as one of the loopholes of the system. Considering this government of Bangladesh enacted a provision for reserved seats. Therefore without any previous experience, thousands of women stepped into the elective position of local government. This book tries to unfold the real situation of these elected women representatives in the decision-making process of the local government deliberations. The male-domination in all spheres in a highly patriarchic society has been found as a major hurdle to ensure full participation of elected women representatives. The book argues that to realize the potentials of women members they need to be empowered and equipped with resources like education, skill, training, etc. as a bottom-up strategy.
