Kenneth Waterman was born in Ottawa, Canada, in 1962. He was educated at the private Priory School, Kingston, Jamaica; Hillcrest High School; and Carleton University, Ottawa. In 1987, he secured his first sales position as a commodity broker with Midland Walwyn. He wrote a weekly column on the commodities market for the Ottawa Sun from 1988-1990. He moved to Glasgow, Scotland, in 1995, where he built his first coffee company. The Woody Buchman series is based on his accounts as a broker, battling addiction, his involvement with a Glasgow East End gang, then building his second coffee company into the largest privately owned discount coffee company in the UK.
