Poet, novelist, and critic Robert Penn Warren (1905--1989) is the only writer to have won the Pulitzer Prize for both fiction and poetry -- among many other honors, including the National Book Award. Born in Guthrie, Kentucky, and educated at Vanderbilt, the University of California, Yale, and Oxford, he was named America's first Poet Laureate in 1985.
