Autorenporträt
Sherry Malunat visited Germany several times to interview the family members of Alex Herman. She recorded the detailed events of Alex's family during World War II over a five-year period. She speaks German and has a love for the German people. Right after the Berlin wall and all the barb wire came down in 1990 Sherry traveled to where Alex lived until he was thirteen years old. On the train ride to Suderode she saw watch towers empty but still standing at the borders, it gave her an eerie feeling as she saw them passing by the train window. Walking through Alex's town was as if time stood still. Many of the buildings that were still standing had visible bullet holes in them and there were still a few Russian soldiers walking around the train station with guns slung over their shoulders. The stores' shelves were still mainly empty. She met with Alex's cousins and a few of his school friends. Sherry writes this book to share the stories of her dear friend, Alex, so that people would know the truth about what the children of Germany went through during World War II.
