Children have more stress related situations than most adults realize. They can stem from pressures at school, home, peers, and parents. Children must learn to deal with all types of situations whether good or bad. Sometimes, they get support or mental counseling, sometimes they don't. Janet Baltimore lives in a rural community, but she is not free from childhood stress. She suffers from anger, depression, and academic struggles. Her mother is disappointing and selfish. Janet has to look after her younger sister, whenever her mother is absent. She is sent to a facility, because she threatened to harm herself. Through it all Janet befriends her math teacher, Mrs. McCrae, with whom she communicates with by writing back and forth. Janet and Mrs. McCrae write to each other using poetry as the genre. Mrs. McCrae encouraged Janet to Write to Live.
