The XLRI Admission Test (XAT) is an all-India test conducted by XLRI (formerly known as Xavier Labour Relations Institute), a business school in Jamshedpur, India, as an entrance test for its management programmes. The XAT is more than 50 years old. It is a two-hour long exam and is divided into three or four sections of multiple-choice questions that test quantitative ability (mathematics), verbal ability (English) and data interpretation/logical reasoning skills. Until recently, there used to be a separate general knowledge section but it was done away with in 2003. In addition to this, there is an essay which needs to be written in 20 minutes after the main two-hour paper. The XAT is quite similar to the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the IIMs, except that the CAT has no essay.
