When it was founded, it was the among the first schools in Yugoslavia specializing in mathematics, along with Mathematical Gymnasium (Matemati ka gimnazija) in Belgrade. The first principal was Stefanija Bakari , sister of Vladimir Bakari , one of the leading politicians in the ruling League of Communists of Yugoslavia and the chairman of the League of Communists of Croatia at the time.
