Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Yakkha people (also known as Yakshas or "Devil-worshippers") were one of the aboriginal inhabitants of Sri Lanka who existed from 6 BCE to 3 CE. They were more powerful and numerous than the Naga people of Sri Lanka who were also present in Sri Lanka at this time. They occupied parts of the west coast and northern territories of Sri lanka. Unlike the Naga they did not convert to Buddhism. The Yakkha had great skill in hydraulic engineering. The complexity and grandeur of their prehistoric water works at Mandura Oya have been described as capable of impressing a pharoah by archaeologists. Their water system, mandura Oya, consisted of 15 ton blocks which were 33 feet high and at the time of its operation it would have regulated millions of tonnes of water.
