The park is best known for its variety of the wild animals. Yala is important for the conservation of Sri Lankan Elephants and aquatic birds. Yala is situated in the southeast region of the country, lies in Southern Province and Uva Province. The park covers 979 square kilometres (378 sq mi) and originally had been designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900. The park is about 300 kilometres (190 mi) from Colombo. Cipriano Sanchez, a Spanish cartographer had charted Yala in his maps in 1560. Henry Engelbrecht, the last Boer prisoner in Ceylon was appointed the first park warden of Yala. There are six national parks and three wildlife sanctuaries in the adjacent area of Yala. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused severe damage on the Yala National park and 250 people has died in the park.
