He is a well-known left-winger in China known for his good ball control and dribbling. He has also played for the China national football team. He started his professional football career with Dalian Shide where he made an immediate impact in establishing himself within the team by playing in 20 league games and scoring 4 goals in the 1999 season. For nine seasons Yan Song established himself as an important member of the team winning four league championships and twice winning the Chinese FA Cup with Dalian Shide. With the dominance of Dalian Shide in the league they were able to play in the AFC Champions League 2006 when Dalian played a home match against J-League champions Gamba Osaka, Yan Song dribbled through the entire Gamba defense and almost scored with a curled lob.
