The placename Gefrin, which is a Brittonic name meaning hill of the goats', survives as the modern Yeavering. Yeavering's most prominent feature is the twin-peaked hill, Yeavering Bell (361 metres above sea level), which is encircled by the wall of a late-prehistoric hillfort, a tribal centre of the Votadini. To the north of the Bell, the land drops off to a terrace 72 metres above sea level (usually known as the whaleback') through which the river Glen has cut a channel at 50 metres above sea level.
