After a short stay at the Atlit detainee camp, he made his way to Jerusalem, where he studied at Hebron Yeshiva, receiving semicha from Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer. He also learned with Rav Yaakov Moshe Charlop, a student of Rav Avraham Yitzchak Kook. Around this time he joined the Haganah.
