However, the citizens of the city didn't know that some of the refugees were suffering from "Yellow Jack," a raging fever that turned its victim's skin and eyes yellow. In what turned out to be one of the most devastating epidemics in U.S. history, the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 killed ten percent of Philadelphia's population in the first month alone.
