Most Fijian politicians outside of the government have come out against the legislation to establish a Commission with the power, subject to presidential approval, to pardon perpetrators and compensate victims of the coup d''état against the elected government in 2000. Along with many politicians, the Military and a number of business and professional organizations have also come out against the bill. The campaign gets its name from the yellow ribbons promoted by the opposition United People''s Party and worn by many citizens, as a sign of their opposition to the legislation. A coalition of organizations opposed to the bill announced on 21 July that they had collected more than five thousand signatures throughout the country. Ponipate Ravula of the Citizens Constitutional Forum said that the petition would be presented to the President and other "institutions that can sway public opinion."
