The electoral district was created in 1976 from Rocky Mountain, Athabasca, Edmonton West, Pembina, and Wetaskiwin ridings. Its most high-profile MP has been Joe Clark, who was Prime Minister 1979-80. Its Member of Parliament is Rob Merrifield, a former farmer. He was first elected to Parliament in the 2000 election. He represents the Conservative Party of Canada. In the last parliamentary session, he served as vice-chair on the 'Standing Committee on Health'.
