Rupert Smith is an author and retired attorney in Johannesburg. He started school in Afrikaans, then swapped to English. He qualified as a lawyer at Wits University in Johannesburg, including six languages in his undergraduate curriculum. He spent 30 years in city law firms as a commercial lawyer.
