In this life that we share, we also share such things as pleasure and agony. We all face these things that life deals us the best way we know how whether looked upon as being good or bad. The choices we make and the way we deal with things has a lot to do with our individual experiences as well as what we have learned from the people around us. There are stages in life in which we all go through as part as human development. These stages should be passed through productively in order to productively continue to grow (within the norms of society). If one is unsuccessful with a stage, even if one moves on to the next stage, they will still have to at some point address and successfully complete that stage in order to function to the best of one's ability.
