High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Yuan Shikai was an important Chinese general and politician famous for his influence during the late Qing Dynasty, his role in the events leading up to the abdication of the last Qing Emperor of China, his autocratic rule as the first President of the Republic of China, and his short-lived attempt to revive the Chinese monarchy, with himself as the "Great Emperor of China". Yuan Shikai was born in the village of Zhangying, Xiangcheng county, Chenzhou prefecture, Henan province. Chenzhou is now called Huaiyang. The village of Zhangying is located immediately north of the centre of Xiangcheng. The Yuan family later moved to a hilly area that was easier to defend, 16 kilometers southeast of Xiangcheng. There the Yuans had built a fortified village, Yuanzhai. Yuanzhai is now located inside Wangmingkou township, on the territory of the county-level city of Xiangcheng. The large country estate of the Yuan family there was recently opened to tourism by the People's Republic of China.
