Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Zodiacal dust forms a pancake-shaped cloud in the Solar System collectively known as the zodiacal cloud. It occupies the same plane as the orbit of the planets from which it derives the name zodiac. The dust particles are between 1 to 300 micrometres in diameter. They originate from the tails of comets and from collisions between asteroids. The cloud was discovered by German astronomer Walter Grotrian in 1934.Small particles of dust that orbit the Sun are steadily removed from the inner solar system by the Poynting-Robertson effect. Larger particles can be reduced in size by collisions to the point where the Poynting-Robertson effect becomes significant. The dust is then replenished by the infall from comets.
