Because of his constant disruption of class order, our teacher, Mrs. Jane, assigned me to share a desk with him. And so we became desk mates for the next two years.
Max, this unusual character whose name I later learned, was always full of vitality and had a mischievous grin that attracted people to him. He always had a group of friends around him, and laughter seemed to follow him from morning to night. His remarkable gregariousness allowed him to effortlessly connect with everyone, while I was the complete opposite.
Max's high school days were spent either reading One Piece in class or in constant conversation with the students around him. His voice varied in pitch, sometimes high, sometimes low, as if he were acting out a gripping drama. He had a gift for transforming the ordinary into something compelling. Max's entrance into my life was like a breath of fresh air that rejuvenated my existence. His constant supply of intriguing ideas left me in awe. To this day, I am not sure if it was all a figment of his imagination or something more profound. Max blurred the line between reality and a fantastical realm.
