A Far Country is a novel by American writer Winston Churchill published in 1915. The book follows the career of Hugh Paret from youth to manhood, and how his profession as a corporation lawyer gradually changes his values. "Mr. Churchill shows us America wandering from the early pure and high ideals of democracy, from its religion of liberty and simplicity, down into the ruck of materialism, to wallow with swine, with the sole ambition of getting fatter, of getting more out of the trough than any of its struggling mates. And then the slow, painful journey back, with its beautiful, hopeful climax! It is this idea on which the book is built, an idea that is close to American thought and feeling. That we are already on that upward journey Mr. Churchill makes clear. But we have far to go yet. It is not this generation, it is the new generation, that will get back home: 'That's the task of every man and woman who wakes up. I've come to see how little can be done for the great majority who have reached our age. It's hard-but it's true. Superstitious, sentiment, the habit of wrong thinking. or of not thinking at all, have struck too deep, the habit of unreasoning acceptance of authority is too paralyzing...The hope lies in those who are coming after us.We really didn't have much chance.'" -Hildegarde Hawthorne

Autorenporträt
Winston Churchill (November 10, 1871 - March 12, 1947) was an American best-selling novelist of the early 20th century. He is nowadays overshadowed, even as a writer, by the very much more famous British statesman of the same name, with whom he was acquainted, but not related. Their lives had some interesting parallels.
