To avoid the gossip, Charlotte tells everyone in Soda Flats that she is a widow. It seems the only respectable role for a lone woman moving west. Once settled in her new town, she meets many good people, including handsome stonemason, Niels Sorensen. Charlotte wants very much to have a life with Niels, but she has so many secrets, not actually being a widow the least of them.
