David Kaiser began his serious study of history as a Harvard undergraduate in the fall of 1965 and began his professional career as a junior faculty member in 1976. During the next 37 years, he taught dozens of courses, wrote seven books, changed the lives of many students, and carefully observed the changes in the four institutions in which he taught, as well as in the historical profession, the humanities, and higher education more generally. Kennedy(2008); and No End Save Victory: How FDR Led the Nation into War(2014). He also made an immediate, palpable impact in the classroom, as the reminiscences of about a dozen of his students from 1977 through 2013 attest. But after fifteen years at Harvard and at Carnegie Mellon, he left mainstream university life and took a position at the Naval War College in Newport. Twice in the 21st century he served as a visiting professor at Williams College and both times he found the undergraduates hungry for what he had to offer.

Harvard College, which awarded about 270 undergraduate history degrees in 1965, awarded only about 50 in 2016, despite a larger number of permanent faculty.
