This originally ran as a newspaper serial and it shows in the episodic nature of the chapters, such as a vivid trip to the circus sandwiched by talk of a mad killer and an unexpectedly sentimental ending.

Mary Grant Bruce (1878-1958) was Australia's best-selling children's author over the years from about 1915 to 1950. she is best know for her series of 15 Billabong stories, which commenced with A Little Bush Maid.
