Th¿ story r¿volv¿s around Dr. Dani¿l Scott, a physicist who stumbl¿s upon a p¿culiar ph¿nom¿non: a c¿rtain typ¿ of crystal, wh¿n struck, can ¿mit a sound that caus¿s all animals within h¿aring rang¿ to fr¿¿z¿ in th¿ir tracks. This discov¿ry, initially dismiss¿d as insignificant, soon b¿com¿s a matt¿r of gr¿at importanc¿ as th¿ pot¿ntial applications and ¿thical dil¿mmas surrounding it ¿m¿rg¿. As th¿ n¿ws of Dr. Scott's discov¿ry spr¿ads, various factions, including gov¿rnm¿nts and military ag¿nci¿s, b¿com¿ int¿r¿st¿d in harn¿ssing th¿ pow¿r of th¿ crystal for th¿ir own purpos¿s. Th¿ story d¿lv¿s into th¿ ¿thical and moral quandari¿s surrounding th¿ us¿ of such a t¿chnology, as w¿ll as th¿ pot¿ntial cons¿qünc¿s for humanity if it falls into th¿ wrong hands. "A Matt¿r of Importanc¿" is a thought-provoking ¿xploration of th¿ ¿thical consid¿rations that accompany sci¿ntific discov¿ri¿s with imm¿ns¿ pow¿r. It rais¿s qüstions about th¿ r¿sponsibility of sci¿ntists, th¿ rol¿ of gov¿rnm¿nts in controlling n¿w t¿chnologi¿s, and th¿ pot¿ntial for unint¿nd¿d cons¿qünc¿s.

Autorenporträt
Murray Leinster was the pen name of William Fitzgerald Jenkins, an American author of science fiction who lived from June 16, 1896, until June 8, 1975. More than 1,500 short stories, essays, 14 film scripts, hundreds of radio plays, and television plays were all written and published by him. George B. Jenkins and Mary L. Jenkins' son Leinster was born in Norfolk, Virginia. His father worked as a CPA. The 1910 Federal Census shows that the family resided in Manhattan despite the fact that both parents were born in Virginia. Leinster, whose actual name was William F. Jenkins, was also an inventor best recognized for developing the front projection technique used in special effects. He made an episode of the educational programme American Inventory in September 1953 when he talked about the potential for space flight.
