It was bound to happen because he has long valued the intellectual life, and he had too many questions about claims that didn't add up about Christianity or any other religion. He came to see that the muscular questions concerning the natural world and our place in it are better tackled by cosmologists, astrophysicists, geologists, archeologists, paleontologists, and other bona fide scientists; instead of pastors, priests, or kings. He also recognizes that while scientific reasoning gets to the core of determining objective, independent truth, it has its limits; especially when it comes to one's inward journey through life. That philosophical quest requires the cultivation of a rich interior life-on one's own terms-to find meaning, passion, and hope. Finn Harper is a retired corporate suit who deliberately lives without much fanfare, spending a great deal of time contemplating the weighty things of life. The thing he now enjoys most, of course, is fiddling with ideas worth writing about-much like the one at hand. Otherwise, his nose is in a book, or his tush on a plane-an ideal way to remind himself how many folks around the world are just like him.
