"Bao Li, your uncle Zhou and your father were children together in the village of Xingping. It was a small fishing village built in the traditional way on stilts beside the warm waters of the China Sea. Like so many people of the villages who married between their families, Bao and Zhou knew they would be wed from the time they were small. Your father sometimes talked about the old days when Bao and Zhou walked together holding hands like lovers in the days when she was so young she could hardly walk. Never had he seen children fall in love so young. He said they acted as if they believed they had been born to marry each other.
"Zhou had decided to delay his marriage to Boa until he was a man of substance, captain of his own boat. Not long after he began his apprenticeship he was drafted into the army to serve in the War to defend the North Koreans from invasion by America and the United Nations. He was first sent to Manchuria and then onto the Korean Peninsula itself. We always thought that if any of our men were drafted they would be drafted into the Navy, but they needed men in the army and so the army took him into their ranks. He fought there for years.
"One day, shortly before Zhou was due to come home, the fishing fleet returned unexpectedly several weeks before they were due. They had hurried back to the shelter of their harbor at the approach of a bad storm. Like all men of the sea, the fishermen knew that a dramatic change in the water and the sky and the dramatic drop of their barometer meant that a big storm was coming. They were right about the big storm, but, although they recognized the signs of a powerful storm, they could not have known that it would be one of the most terrible typhoons of their lives. Today they call them super typhoons.
"When it was over the fishing fleet had been destroyed and the shape of the coastline had been changed forever. The fishing boats had been carried inland and wrecked against the mountains that rose from the long valley many miles beyond the shore. Worse still, the stilts, that for generations past had allowed high water to flow harmlessly below the houses, had not been tall enough or strong enough to withstand the massive storm surge that the wind carved in the sea. The village and most of its inhabitants were gone, washed away by that terrible surge. Bao and Mengyao were among the missing. All of your father's family survived along with their house, but their boat was destroyed.
"Many of the villagers, including Mengyao, were never seen again. Their families mourned their loss and were distressed by the fact that they could not honor them properly and prepare them for their lives in the hereafter.
Bao's body was found ten days later miles from the shore. It had been carried inland with the boats. None of her family had lived through the storm. In honor of Zhou, your father performed the honors of preparation and buried her in the ancient cemetery high on the bluff above the village where the graves could not be eroded away by storms or sea.
