Author's Preface to the Second Edition,
This two-part story correlates with selected songs of the band Genesis, from 1972 to 1982. It includes tracks from the albums; Foxtrot, Selling England By the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, A Trick of the Tail, Wind & Wuthering, And Then There Were Three, Duke, Abacab and Three Sides Live.
This story is a genesis of a musical. The story line was written and woven to highlight certain songs in the bands catalogue that impacted me. Each "chapter" has been renamed as a recording "session" with a one-word definition and a song address. The song for each session has an address or identifier clue to know what song it is. Please refer to the back of the book for the listings of the songs.
This story is told in the future year of 2056 narrated by Cal, recalling his young teen years growing up in the San Francisco California south Bay Area in the early 1980s.
This "genesis of a musical", is part one, with 16 sessions with songs. I have the outline for book two with an additional 16 tracks. Tracks include: Suppers Ready, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, All In a Mouses Night, Ripples, Squonk, A Trick of the Tail and including Horizons among others.
This story was originally written in 2016 as an outline, self-published as a story in 2017. After getting feedback, I adjusted with updates and changes in an attempt to make it more of a palatable read. The way we speak and write are not the same. Errors in the grammar are intentional. This is the second edition in 2024 with updates.
Also, the book cover is my photography in black and white of a rose bud and thorn. I planted that rose bush at a previous home we had lived in. The back cover has all the one word definitions for each chapter of both stories-A Tricky Tale, Ashes to Roses and the unwritten story. Thirty-two in total. Both of my original ideas for a cover was out of budget, this was my plan C.
Why did I write this story? That question has taken me on a heartfelt journey into my mind and soul. It started when one of my children asked me what music I listened to as a kid. That question impacted me deeply. This story is an attempt to answer that question.
A humble and gracious thank you for the kindness shown by Steve Hackett in his correspondence over these past few years. That kindness has kindled a desire to continue this project.
Who am I? I am a member of the rank and file of society, no one special. Just a guy who as a kid loved the music of Genesis. I'm not a social media person. I don't have the patience or love for it. If the story merits your acceptance, I am grateful and a humble thank you. If on the other hand you don't, well, thanks for stopping by and all the best to you.
The acronym used throughout the story-flitca is the abbreviation for "feel, learn, imagine, think, change, act". It is a mantra of principles to stay grounded and free from becoming a slave to anything. Each principle is equal to the other in harmony. They are not capitalized as a reminder that the most important aspects of life are usually simple and often obscured by the opposite of truth.
Most importantly, thank you so very much for reading thus far.
Peace and blessings to you,
Sean
