Agate Nesaule achieved widespread acclaim and won an American Book Award for her memoir, A Woman in Amber: Healing the Trauma of War and Exile, the story of her family's flight from their native Latvia, survival through the horrors of World War II, and emigration to the United States. She is also the author of In Love with Jerzy Kosinski. A professor emerita of English and women's studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Nesaule lives, writes, and gardens in Madison.
