She is best known for her historical works, particularly A Woman's Part in a Revolution (1897), in which she recounted her personal experiences during the Johannesburg Revolt. Hammond's writing also reflects her keen interest in the broader socio-political issues of her time, including her exploration of the tensions between the Boer government and the Uitlanders in The Boers and the Uitlanders (1901).
