David McDowall Hannay (1853-1934) was a British naval historian, who helped to prove sea power as an important military tool. As a journalist, he contributed to many, varied publications. His works include A Short History of the Royal Navy, The Navy and Sea Power, Naval Courts Martial, The Sea Trader, biographies of Tobias Smollett and Frederick Marryat, and the novels King Dobbs, Eustace Conyers, and Singleton Fontenoy.
