Baroness Emma Magdolna Rozália Mária Jozefa Borbála "Emmuska" Orczy de Orczi, better known as Baroness Orczy (1865-1947), was a Hungarian-born British novelist, playwright, and artist of noble origin. She is most famous for her series of novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel, the first of which was published in 1905. Her character, Sir Percy Blakeney, a charming English aristocrat who leads a double life to rescue French aristocrats from the guillotine, became an archetype of the masked vigilant savior and paved the way for subsequent heroic figures in literature and other media. Orczy's work on the 'Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel' continued to develop the themes of adventure, romance, and duality that pervaded her seminal creation. Born in Tarnaörs, Hungary, she lived through tumultuous times which influenced her worldview and literary style.
