After London, or Wild England, written in 1885, was far ahead of its time. An apocalyptic novel is commonplace in the 21st century, but at the close of the 19th century it was a new concept. Jeffries was fascinated with what nature could be if left alone. His love for the English rural areas is strong in this novel. The reader can feel his anger and dread at what change may mean to the land he loves.
