The history of the oldest surviving church south of Virginia and the only remaining colonial cruciform church in South Carolina is one of wealth and poverty, acclaim and anonymity, slavery and freedom, war and peace, quarrelling and cooperation, failure and achievement. Paul Porwoll fell in love with St. Andrew's Parish Church the first time he walked through the graveyard and stepped inside the church. He joined, as did many before him, because of the historic building, but stayed because of the people he met. His passion for history, research, and writing compelled him to tell the story of this wonderful place, its remarkable people, and its extraordinary past. Paul and his wife, Lori, live on Johns Island.
