My email signature block includes a statement, "A grain of sand, a pearl it makes." I wrote that several years ago as a reminder that no matter how insignificant you may feel at times, you can become something strong and important. We need to raise the bar by which we challenge our youth, and that effort begins at home. It is said twenty-five percent of the children in the U.S. have only one parent at home. There was a mother in the city of Detroit who worked long hours and sometimes at two or three different jobs, but she challenged her son by having him get two books from the library each week and reading them. He soon moved to the top of his class. She helped him meet the challenge of getting a good education. He eventually became a famous neurosurgeon. I look to put some interest in books that will attract children to read and seek more.
