Although wars are infamous for loss of life and injury, the author will provide factual information on the various ways that each war produced improvements in methodology and treatment of injuries, illness and improved the outcome for millions of Americans. New technology from each war will be discussed as well as how we dealt with the Spanish pandemic of 1918 and how it compared with our current battle with the COVID-19 virus. In the early years of war (1775-1783), medical care took a turn for the worse with the majority of soldiers dying from disease due to unsanitary conditions. In 1812, the typical soldier still died from infectious diseases such as dysentery, typhoid, and pneumonia-the number one killer at the time. Eventually, handwashing would be introduced, reducing infections and saving lives. Other early medical improvements would include anesthesia, tourniquets, amputations, prosthetics, and embalming. Amputations saved more lives than any other wartime medical procedure. Later wars will see the invention of technology such as sonar (ultrasound), radar, and thermography, to name a few.

Bud's writing experience began shortly after retiring from the Navy in 1975. During his tenure in the military as a Navy Hospital Corpsman, he traveled the world practicing his medical skills as a Physician's Assistant aboard ship. On shore duty stations (Naval Hospitals), he was a trained Radiographer (X-Ray Technologist) and had acquired adequate rank to also be a department manager. After retiring from the Navy, he worked at civilian hospitals in Cincinnati and Dayton Ohio serving as the department director. While at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, he began writing a monthly column for Advance Magazine out of Valley Forge Pa. His monthly articles were usually topics he had lectured on at annual meetings and conventions. He was recruited by Sinclair Community College and remained in this position as an instructor for twenty-two years. During this time he was recruited by McGraw Hill Publishers to assist with Editing and writing medical text books, including text books that were used at Sinclair College such as Basic Medical Terminology. During his time at Sinclair, Bud taught Basic Medical Terminology, Advanced Medical Terminology, and Introduction to computers. As of March 2023, Bud has published eight books, all non-fiction.
