Nathan O'Discin is a homeland security engineer, entrepreneur, instructor, and author. Born and raised in West Virginia, O'Discin frequently enriches his works with a wry attitude toward his Appalachian culture, touching on subjects of poverty, faith, and southern hospitality, often incorporating the thick dialect of central Appalachia into his writing style. Today, O'Discin lives with his husband in the beautiful bluegrass foothills of central Kentucky, among an assortment of animals and gardens which he says give him clarity and solace in his busy lifestyle. O'Discin describes his writing journey as one fraught with challenges, many similar to the characters in his works. Illiterate until the age of 8, O'Discin would go on to complete his first manuscript just four years later on a shoddy notebook that was meant to be his science journal. By age 15, O'Discin was a prolific blogger, leading him to notoriety in the blogosphere with the blog The Chronicles of a 21st Century Coal Miner that went on to inspire and humor tens of thousands of readers daily.
