After a lifetime spent hunting trouble and gaining a fearsome reputation along the Mexican border, Johnny faces new and even more daunting challenges. He's trying hard to settle into a new life as a rancher in the Cimarron Valley in New Mexico. More difficult still, he is dealing with living with his family for the first time, adjusting to life with his upright father and Harvard-educated brother.
This proves hard enough, after a life spent as gunhawk, but his past just won't let him go. Whenever he turns around, something else is there to threaten his chances of making this new life a success.
Whether it's gunfighters looking to settle old scores, or bushwhackers who'd like to put a bullet in his back, there's always someone out to get him. The neighbors and maybe his father too want him gone or dead. They're uneasy about having a gunfighter living among them, hating and distrusting Johnny both for him being a gunfighter and for his part-Apache blood.
They want him gone, that is until lawless drifters bring trouble to Cimarron, threatening the town's peace. Then the neighbors want to hire Fierro, want to hide behind his gun. When the drifters attack a woman in town, Johnny knows he's the only one who can stop them but at what cost?
