Hendrik Willem van Loon was an eminent Dutch-American historian, journalist, and award-winning author whose work predominantly explored history and the arts for both children and general audiences. Born on January 14, 1882, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Van Loon emigrated to the United States in 1903 and became a naturalized American citizen in 1919.
