Bernard Benson was born on April 24, 1862, at Wellington College in Berkshire. He was the sixth child of Edward White Benson (1829-1896), who was the first teacher of the college and later became Archbishop of Canterbury from 1883 to 1896. His mother, Mary Sidgwick Benson, was related to the scientist Henry Sidgwick. Edward Frederic Benson, who is best known for his Mapp and Lucia books, and Robert Hugh Benson, who was a priest in the Church of England before becoming a Roman Catholic and wrote many famous books, were also brothers of Benson. Margaret Benson, their sister, was an artist, an author, and a self-taught Egyptologist.
