Jeanette Leonard Gilder (18491916) was a pioneering American female journalist at The New York Tribune and The New York Heraldwhere she was the music, drama, and literary critic. Along with her brother, Joseph Benson Gilder, she founded and edited the journal The Critic.

Joseph Benson Gilder (18581936) was an American journalist at The New York Herald. After spending time in the United States Naval Academy, he and his sister, Jeanette Leonard Gilder, founded and edited the journal The Critic, which featured book reviews and criticism. He also edited the works of famous Americans such as James Russell Lowell and John Hay.
