Austria is a landlocked country in southern Central Europe. About two thirds of the area are taken up by alpine mountains. In the east the landscape merges into the Pannonian plain. Accordingly, the alpine climate dominates the country, while in the east the climate has more continental features. Due to the diverse topography, a large number of species occur in Austria. The country protects its nature through the establishment of six national parks and many other nature reserves. Most famous is probably the Neusiedler See, one of the few steppe lakes in Europe that has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This extremely shallow lake and its surroundings are one of the most attractive bird sanctuaries in Europe. The alpine bird world is easy to observe because of Austria's excellent tourist infrastructure. BirdLife International has designated more than 50 IBAs (Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas), including the easily accessible Wienerwald, which has been designated as an independent UNESCO biosphere reserve. This multilingual (en, de, fr, es, ja, cn) bird guide introduces the entire bird life of Austria. As a bonus, links to HD videos of more than 100 bird species are included.
