New Caledonia is an archipelago of Melanesia east of Australia. The isolated location (about 1200 km from Australia) has led to the evolution of an incredible number of endemic animal and plant species and this also applies to the birds. Not only the main island of Grande Terre, but also its satellite islands, especially the Loyalty Islands, have their own specialties. In addition, there are some other bird species with very small distribution area, e.g. extending to Vanuatu. Therefore, BirdLife International has declared the archipelago a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P). Naturally, the climate is tropical, but the maritime influence has a strong moderating effect.
