Taiwan is an industrialized country that began late to set up national parks. There are now 9 national parks, which together make up almost 9% of the country's surface. Four national parks lie on offshore islands. Of the other 5, at least 3 are very good for birdwatching, namely Kenting in the extreme south, Yangmingshan near Taipei and Taroko, a gorge in the Taroko Mountains. In Taiwan one can observe a great variety of bird species, also because of migratory birds. In addition, 27 species of birds are currently recognized as endemic to Taiwan.
