Christmas Island is the coral-encrusted tip of an extinct volcano. It lies some 360 km south of Java and 1560 km from its closest point on the Australian mainland. Due to its isolated location Christmas Island has developed a high level of endemism, and BirdLife International declared it a Primary Endemic Bird Area (EBA-P). Two thirds of the Island is included in the Christmas Island National Park. The biodiversity makes Christmas Island a popular destination. Best months to visit are July through to october, between November and June the Island is subject to monsoons. This multilingual (en, de, fr, es, ja, cn) bird guide introduces the entire bird life of Christmas Island in colour.
