- Criminology is the scientific study of preventing criminal behavior, knowing its nature, causes, consequences, and how to control it, whether on the individual or social level. Criminology is an interdisciplinary field in both the behavioral and social sciences, drawing particularly on research from sociologists, psychologists, philosophers, psychiatrists, biologists, social anthropologists, as well as jurists. Criminology has witnessed significant development over the past 100 years. There are three stages in the United States of America: The first stage (1900-1930): This is the golden age of research. The second stage (1930-1960): This is the golden age of theory and criminal research The third phase (1960-2000): is seen as an important turning point for criminology. The term criminology was coined by the Italian professor Rafaela Garofalo and then by the Frenchman Paul Topinard.
