Most of us are aware that there are currently a plethora of large-scale threats to the health and well-being of significant portions of humanity. But nature has given us examples of near-instantaneous phase changes. Think of hot water. At 99 degrees Celsius, we have water. And at 100 degrees, voila, we have steam. At a macro level, a totally new thing, created just like that. Also, think of the way in which a caterpillar changes into a butterfly. Not quite as instantaneous, but you get the idea. I've created this novel to vision a set of circumstances under which such a phase change can happen...
