The novel also presents the struggle over succession during the Fatimid rule, and depicts the contradictions of the Bedouin society in the father's obedience to the caliph despite hatred and the Bedouin woman's refusal to conspire against him despite her desire for revenge. The play was presented for the first time in 1918 at the Britannia Theater, performed by Abdel Rahman Rushdie's troupe, and since its publication in 1922, it has become a source of inspiration and pride for Arab theatre.
